Japan mobile game revenue hits $10bn despite
Sensor Tower data shows Japan generated over $10 billion in mobile game IAP revenue in the past year, ranking second in Asia, even as downloads fell 5.4%.

Japan generated over $10 billion in mobile game in-app purchase revenue over the past 12 months. This figure marks a 5.1% year-over-year decline but still places Japan's revenue at more than double South Korea's and nearly four times that of Taiwan.
The country ranked second in Asia for mobile game spending, trailing only China's iOS market. During the same period, Japan recorded 585 million mobile game downloads, a 5.4% drop year-on-year, ranking it ninth in Asia for installs. The disparity between high revenue and lower download rankings points to a mature market where growth depends more on existing player engagement and spending than on attracting new users.
Player engagement remained a cornerstone of the market's strength. Gamers spent approximately 16.7 billion hours in mobile games, a level of engagement that has stayed comparatively stable since 2024. IOS devices maintained a modest lead in downloads and accounted for the majority of consumer spending.
Top Grossing and Most Downloaded Games
From January through July 2026, Konami's eFootball climbed six positions to become Japan's highest-grossing mobile game. The title reached an all-time monthly revenue high in July, with Sensor Tower noting that World Cup-related activities helped drive engagement and spending. It also saw the most revenue growth during the period.
Monster Strike and Last War: Survival ranked second and third for in-app purchase revenue. They were followed by Whiteout Survival and Umamusume: Pretty Derby. Notable new releases like Arknights: Endfield, Dragon Quest Smash/Grow, and hololive Dreams were among the fastest-growing titles by revenue. Nobunaga’s Ambition: True Battle also recorded significant gains.
On the downloads chart, Block Blast! Remained Japan's most downloaded mobile game. The virtual idol title hololive Dreams debuted in second place, while Arrows Puzzle Escape climbed 52 positions to rank third. Royal Kingdom and Dragon Quest Smash/Grow completed the top five for downloads.
Genre Performance and Trends
Puzzle games continued to dominate mobile downloads in Japan. Subcategories like sort, match pair, block, and match merge-2 all recorded year-over-year growth, with puzzle sort games leading at 45.8% of the puzzle download segment.
Consumer spending remained concentrated in deeper live-service experiences. The 4X strategy subgenre led all mobile categories for revenue and grew by 9.4%. Turn-based RPGs, puzzle games, and squad RPGs remained major spending categories. The realistic sports genre grew by 8%, with eFootball's performance highlighting how regular events and licensed content can sustain monetisation.
The report identifies several titles that led download growth. Hololive Dreams, Dragon Quest Smash/Grow, and Heartopia were frontrunners. Order Crazy climbed 384 positions, and Arrows Puzzle Escape rose 52 places.
