Sony has launched QSSR, an AI-based upscaling technology for the standard PlayStation 5, first available in Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei via free patches. The company announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) on October 1, 2026. This new feature debuted through free updates for those two major titles, adding QSSR as an optional graphics setting. The patch for both games will go live later today. Sony is making the technology available to all developers at no cost.

How QSSR improves visuals in supported games

QSSR enhances detail retention and reduces temporal artifacts. Sony describes the overall improvement as notable for image detail and stability. In Marvel’s Wolverine, the technology maintains more detail in fine objects and distant structures compared to standard upscaling. Mike Fitzgerald, director of technology at Insomniac Games, said QSSR adds pixel-level clarity and stability to busy environments like dense streets and alleyways.

For Ghost of Yōtei, QSSR enhances foreground vegetation definition. It helps grass maintain its actual shape rather than appearing as floating green lines with aliasing. Jasmin Patry, principal rendering engineer at Sucker Punch Productions, stated QSSR brings fine-detail improvements and a level of temporal stability not previously possible on the standard PS5.

Digital Foundry measured QSSR’s processing cost at roughly 1.5 to 1.8 milliseconds when reconstructing an 864p image up to 1440p in Marvel’s Wolverine. This cost is a real performance hit, not a free quality boost. Games may require dynamic resolution adjustments or other tuning to preserve frame-rate targets when QSSR is active. Developers may still need to adjust texture streaming and resolution settings for optimal results.

How QSSR relates to PSSR and PS5 hardware

QSSR is a lightweight, streamlined variant of PSSR designed for standard PS5 constraints. It grew out of Project Amethyst, a collaboration between Sony and AMD that kicked off last year. QSSR’s architecture is a streamlined neural network hand-tuned for the standard PS5's GPU.

PSSR remains the higher-fidelity upscaling solution exclusive to the PS5 Pro hardware, which debuted earlier this year. Sony calls PSSR its gold standard on the Pro model. The PS5 Pro has dedicated machine-learning hardware enabling higher performance for PSSR. QSSR is not as good at maintaining detail as PSSR on PS5 Pro. Sony stops well short of claiming QSSR achieves parity with PS5 Pro output. However, QSSR should be more accurate than traditional temporal upscaling on the base PS5.

What QSSR means for developers and players

Sony will provide QSSR to all developers for future PS5 titles at no additional cost to users. It is a per-game feature requiring developer implementation via patches or native integration. Titles already supporting PSSR can integrate QSSR relatively easily, according to Digital Foundry.

Wider adoption could make AI-assisted reconstruction a standard option in PS5 graphics menus. This would allow sharper images without hardware upgrades, provided developers implement it. The PS5 Pro costs $900, and the PlayStation 6 is expected to be expensive and not affordable for at least an extra few months. QSSR offers a path to enhanced visual fidelity on existing hardware. The patch for Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei featuring QSSR will go live later today.
