Ace Combat 8 Wings of Theve Gameplay Story Features
Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve redefines the series with a propaganda-driven narrative and dynamic mission design set in a war-torn Strangereal.

Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is set ten years after Ace Combat 7, in 2029. The Republic of Sotoa launches a blitzkrieg invasion of the Central Usea Federation (FCU) using devastating orbital missile attacks called Lanzas Tonitrus, leading to the fall of the capital, Theve. The player begins as a silent weapon systems officer, stranded on a lifeboat before being rescued by the aging FCU aircraft carrier Endurance, from which the remnant forces wage a desperate defensive war.
The player is assigned to fly alongside Jan 'Rex' Cope, the legendary 'Wings of Theve' and the FCU's ace of aces. This myth, however, is propaganda. Cope has never shot down an enemy aircraft; his kill count was fabricated to give hope to the people of Usea. When Cope is shot down and drowns in the opening scenes, the player inherits his callsign and legacy. The player then leads Joker Flight, with the ghost of Cope narrating the action from within the player's head, a mechanic reminiscent of Johnny Silverhand in Cyberpunk 2077. The narrative explores heavy themes of propaganda, nationalism, corporate influence, and the horrors of war, arguing that the best outcome would be an end to conflict so no one ever has to fly a combat mission again.
Joker Flight is a key squadron. Baxter, callsign 'Professor', is a former false professor turned pilot who mentors the group. Tasha is the youngest, a civilian aerobatic pilot of generational talent forced into service who refuses to shoot anyone down. Coster, callsign 'Noise', is a quiet rock and roll enthusiast who flies as her wingman. In-game radio chatter brings these characters to life. Tasha taunts enemy squadrons over the radio. Coster plays music over communications to inspire the crew. These interactions, along with moments of calm aboard the Endurance in mess decks and hangars, help players connect with the characters and convey the human cost of war beyond the cockpit.
Gameplay and Systems
Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve features 30 missions across diverse environments like open seas, forests, and snow-covered mountains. Players earn points to select aircraft, weapons, and parts for customizing their loadout. Squad aircraft can be equipped manually or assigned automatically based on mission suitability. The game offers dual control schemes: simplified, intuitive controls for beginners and an Expert scheme enabling full pitch, roll, and yaw control for complex manoeuvres.
Mission objectives adapt dynamically based on battlefield conditions, requiring real-time improvisation. One mission involves battling a Sotoa land battleship with tank tracks, where players must destroy its weapons while covering advancing ground troops. Another requires destroying hidden aircraft that guide orbital missiles by following their laser designators through clouds. Players can also hunt radar-invisible supersonic planes by spotting their contrails. New environmental destruction sees buildings and vehicles crumble realistically when damaged. While targeting weak points on large vessels is more efficient, it is no longer strictly required to inflict damage. Planes can now glance off surfaces with minor damage instead of exploding on any contact, a change from earlier games. Players can issue commands to wing-mates, and action replays automatically select cinematic camera angles.
Presentation and Audio
The game's presentation is a highlight, blending fully animated first-person segments with traditional cinematic cut-scenes and smash-cuts for a dynamic storytelling style. It borrows cinematic techniques from films like Top Gun: Maverick, including close-up pilot face-cam shots. The audio mix expertly balances intense combat chatter with story-driven radio communications. The soundtrack has been described as one of the best of the year. Exceptional voice acting elevates the well-drawn, complex characters, with player relationships with Joker Flight members driving much of the story's emotional impact. Some dialogue is described as occasionally clunky, with unnatural pauses for plot exposition.
The game features moments of calm aboard the Endurance, including interactions in the mess deck, hangars, and meeting rooms.
