Rockstar Games is preparing an advanced and dynamic meteorological system for Grand Theft Auto VI. The system is capable of altering map conditions in real time and changing gameplay, integrating with the game's physics engine to affect vehicle handling, combat, and mission outcomes.

In GTA 6, meteorological phenomena will be integrated with the game's physics engine. Intense wind gusts will affect vehicle handling, projectile trajectory, and the mobility of aircraft like helicopters or airplanes. Tropical storms and hurricanes will be able to flood urban areas, drastically reduce visibility, and alter evacuation or traffic routes in Vice City. Improved water physics mean precipitation will accumulate in dynamic puddles that reduce automobile traction, requiring greater precision when driving at high speeds. Missions and police chases will change drastically if they occur during a tropical storm. Players will be forced to adapt escape or combat strategies based on visibility and terrain conditions.

Environmental changes extend to NPC and ecosystem behavior

The climate in GTA 6 will affect not only the player but also the map's ecosystem. Non-playable characters will react organically by seeking shelter during strong storms. Local fauna will modify behavior patterns according to temperature and weather severity. The weather system will trigger these organic reactions while also impacting the game's ecosystem and map conditions.

Contrast with previous titles highlights technical evolution

This system represents a major upgrade for the franchise. In previous GTA entries, rain or fog were mainly visual effects. Rockstar's earlier title, Red Dead Redemption 2, featured more advanced weather with intense storms accompanied by lightning, thunder, big gusts of wind, and spooky dark clouds. That game also featured snow and dust storms in relevant parts of its map. GTA 6's system builds upon this foundation for a more interactive experience.

Game Informer's exclusive cover story details the system

Game Informer confirmed GTA 6 will be the magazine's cover story this month. The upcoming 14-page story will feature exclusive interviews and screenshots. It will dive into the game's "advanced weather systems that simulate Florida’s less sunny weather phenomena." Grand Theft Auto VI is set in the state of Leonida, a fictional version of Florida. The studio is reportedly still refining and optimizing the complex systems before offering official details, and Rockstar Games has maintained reserve when questioned about its climate plans. Game Informer said: "Rockstar Games prepares one of the most ambitious technical evolutions for the franchise." The story goes live tomorrow, September 29.
